THE SECURITY INSIDER

Contributed by Mark Harris,
Global Director of SophosLabs
A View from SophosLabs

2007 has undoubtedly been the year of the Storm worm (aka Dorf). This threat has evolved over the past year, but the theme of “You’ve received a greeting card” keeps returning. Halloween was no exception and Christmas cards quickly started to appear.

The most worrying trend has been the introduction of Mac malware from a well- known gang of malware writers.

The ‘Zlob’ gang regularly updates fake video decoders to infect users with adware and malware. During November and December they continued to register new domains and set up video sites intended to lure victims.

In their ploy, Mac users browsing with Firefox are encouraged to install a codec to allow them to watch a video on a website. Once installed, a Trojan horse is delivered via a DMG (Disk Image) file.

This is not a red alert, but it is a wake-up call to Mac users! SophosLabs continues to provide you up to date protection for all the latest malware, spam and web threats.
